You two are using your reasoning powers well. I hadn't thought of the cold in the mountains, but I should have. You needed winter riding gear and special underwear that stay warm when wet for sure, & maybe electric gloves. I would have cut the day short, too. Riding at 40-degrees when dry can be fairly comfortable, but riding in the rain at any temperature was never fun for me. You might be able to adjust your planned trail to riding out of the weather fronts. I don't know 'cause I'm only commenting from long distance, and late at that.
