Day 3 on the road.. Finally getting somewhere!
by Sarah on Jun.03, 2009, under Cali or Bust!
We put about 450 miles on the bikes today. We made it from Shawnee Ok, to La Rosa, NM.. It was an amazing ride!
We took off kind of late from Oklahoma due to the rain and cold weather.. That and I just didn’t want to get out of the wonderful bed the hotel had! We actually stopped at a few places today, and slowed the pace up a bit.
We stopped in Cherokee, Ok at the Cherokee trader.. They had some really awesome – authentic Indian jewelry, moccasins, and dream catchers. Not to mention really pretty gems and stones that I drooled over!
The next stop was the General Thomas P. Stafford Air and Space Museum. That was an awesome stop!!! Here are some pictures of what we saw…
WWII fighters.. I like “The Focker Dr” fighter!
Engines from Apollo, and a Space bathroom
The Capsule and USAF plane sitting outside of the museum
A Saturn rocket (It was huge!!) and a demo sized case of the rockets
another rocket and the congressional space medal of honor
about the medal, and the suit that Stafford wore in space
Kitty Hawk/ Wright brothers
About Charles Lindbergh
Astronauts, and some space medals
Titan 2nd stage rocket engine and Apollo
We made it into Texas not too long after going to the museum…
Then we stopped at a little ma and pop diner shortly after crossing the line.. It took a while to get our cheeseburger so I had time to mess with my phone LOL!!!
I forgot to mention.. Someone must have been reading my blogs on here in Texas.. Right after the ma and pa diner there was about a 30lb dead coon laying on the road.. ew… Not only a coon.. but I saw my first armadillo and kangaroo today.. Of course they were road kill though
I have come to a couple of conclusions about Texas.. I think if you pull it up on a map, it should look freckled… What trees there are in Tx are in one big blob and they are just scattered all over like that.. 2nd, It’s really flat and everything looks the same.. A big nothing is what I was calling it.. LOL
Here is the big nothing.. and some cows…
I could finally tell a difference in scenery when we got closer to New Mexico.. The far and few between trees, turned into shrubs.. That, and you could see some rock formations in the distance.
The first picture is the sun setting in the distance, it’s my favorite.. the other two are what the beginnings of NM looks like.
Once we got to New Mexico, it was awesome… The speed limit went up to 75mph!!!!!!!! WoooOooo!!! But then the road work and speed limits of 55mph came up.. hehehe…. The weather got kind of icky in NM.. I could have sworn there were funnel clouds over us.. maybe not though?… It was freezing and raining a bit too.. so that didn’t help.. For future reference or anyone going to New Mexico.. Fuel is far and few between Texas and New Mexico…
Here is the only little gas station that we found after about 120 miles…
So, now we are in La Rosa New Mexico.. Tomorrow we are heading to the Petrified Forest. Hopefully the weather will warm up just a hair LOL…
Ashley and Autumn, Sorry I didn’t call you guys today.. I’ll give it a try tomorrow!! Give my babies lovins!!!
Keep leaving comments!!! I check every stop for gas to see if there are any new ones!!!!
G’night for now!

I didn’t know they had wild kangaroos in Texas, but I’ve been told that armadillo roadkill in Texas is as common as raccoon roadkill in WV.
If you take pics of something big, put a person in the pic for relative scale when you can; so, we can imagine the size of the big thing.
120-mi between fuel stops would have ruled-out my old Sportster. If I traveled 50-mi from Huntington, I had to fill-up someplace to get home again. It had a 2.2-gal tank and got about 45-mpg = 99-mi max range per tank. I still have a bigger tank, but no bike.

The pics are great ! I agree that you should have taken pic of roo with one of you for reference. Glad you two are safe and having fun. BTW what are you paying for gas ? Has shot up here ! Love and prayers to both of you and got my eye on you (tracking) LOL.
Build big, shiney, memories of today, for they are what you will pull out tomorrow when things are not as nice. Memories, after all, are the only things we take with us forever.
Love

Kangaroos??? You need to post a pic of one cause you’ve either made a serious wrong turn or you’re spotting jackrabbits. They look kinda like a WV rabbit on steroids. Your Dad’s right, take lots of pics and take the time to make memories…
I’m thinking about quitting my job and trying it too….

Hey Kiddo,
Well, seems you are making good time and are in Arizona. They tell me the red rocks look spectacular in the sun, please take a good shot for me.
In other news around home, Leasa put one on its side this morning in the downpour at Dogfork. Your guys were pulling them out when I drove by. Another hydroplane just outside of Chapmanville by a small white car. You guys be careful in whatever wet weather you may find.
Watch the news? Hell, this is the news to me, watching you two progress across the US while you are still young and free enough to enjoy it !
Proud of you two. Tell Rick he has jumped many high cudos in the father book of life.
“A smart person looks at wonder and asks why ? A simple person looks at wonder and watches in awe while committing it to memory. I am and have always been a simple person and am glad of it.”
As Always,
Love and prayers,

Hey Hon,
Man oh man, now that is F*L*A*T land! Looks like no shade for miles. Any tumbleweeds yet? Kangaroos in TX? I’ll have to Google that one! LOL Would love to see a pic or two of those beautiful gems, stones and Indian jewelry you were talking about. What an excellent photo of the setting sun with the rays looking like they’re touching the ground. Tell Rick he looks great with blonde hair and a short-order cook uniform on, LOL! Y’all take your time and enjoy the sites and each other. Thank you both for including all of us on this awesome adventure of yours! Love and hugs, Mom
